Writing Journal 5: My Favorite Sport to Watch

 8.58 AM.

Oh, here I go again talking about F1 and Motorsport. You might think I'm pretty obsessed at the moment... and you might be completely right. I love watching car races and I'm not ashamed to say it, but I won't explain what is F1 again, as a hobby, this time I'm going to explain why I'm so interested.

     I'm back!

As I explained before, there's two championships: one for drivers and one for teams or constructors. That is, in my opinion, what makes F1 so interesting (most of motorsport works like that but I'm only going to talk about F1).

Every team has got two drivers, those drivers work for the team, but they also work towards winning a championship for themselves so, as you can imagine, sometimes there's a lot of bad feelings between the drivers if the team doesn't manage them well enough. Team orders create a lot of discussion, especially if the driver doesn't listen to them; one can be ordered to let their teammate pass them, because the other one seems faster and the team is interested in winning the most points, but if they don't comply it might create a big disagreement between all of them and it might even cause an accident.

One of the most interesting things, in my opinion, is car development; once you understand terms like "DRS", "downforce", "graining" and things like that, you enjoy the races even more. So much money and work goes into developing those cars, making sure they are running perfectly and that reliability problems won't destroy a driver's race... nothing worse than seeing your favorite driver about to win their first race in Formula 1 and then hearing on their radio "power unit not working"... goodbye win number 1.

Another big part of watching a race are the journalists who narrate it. In Spain, Antonio Lobato, a journalist, narrates with the help of Pedro de la Rosa, who was actually a driver some years ago, and Toni Cuquerella, an engineer who has worked for really big teams, their insight is amazing because you hear the race from three different point of views: journalist, driver and engineer. Lobato might actually be a bit biased towards Spanish drivers, everyone knows he absolutely loves Fernando Alonso (who wouldn't?) but sometimes it is a bit much. Nevertheless, I think they are the best team narrating races, because English narrators just don't give me the same feel.

For me, F1 is a really important hobby, I become very invested in every race, the really get my blood pumping hahahaha. Sometimes it is really scary, for example, last year one driver had a big accident, the car was absolutely destroyed, split in two, and covered in flames, he was alive and mostly unharmed, nothing short of a miracle. But there's also really happy times, I actually cried the first time Carlos Sainz Jr. got a podium.

Honestly, once the season ends in December, I spend my weekends counting down to March, when it will star again. Next year's regulations are going to be different, even the car prototype looks very different, and I think it will be a very interesting season. But for now, I'm just enjoying this season, which is far from finished yet.
